Info Title:
Portland Co. Closes Colorado Springs Plant
Portland Company Closes Colorado Springs Plant
graphic for visual presentation of text The exhaustion of bonanza mines is often referred to as the reason why a large expansion in metallic production does not follow war prices. Unfortunately gold production is hindered rather than helped by high prices, but the continuing exhaustion of known deposits is as patent as those of other metals.
graphic for visual presentation of text Witness the closing of the Colorado Springs plant of the Portland Gold Mining Company, of which a final clean-up was made in April. This mill was built to treat high-grade ores only, and is useless now that the high-grade ores of the Cripple Creek District are being exhausted.
graphic for visual presentation of text In its sixteen years of life it has extracted gold at an average rate of over two million dollars per year, but during the past years there has been a constant decrease in the tonnage of high-grade ore shipped, owing to a lessened production of the district, this doubtless accentuated by the shortage of efficient labor and the high cost of fuel, powder, timber, and other necessary supplies.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text The Portland Company foresaw the probable shutdown of the Colorado Springs plant and provided room for the treatment of their own and custom high-grade ore when constructing their new Independence Mill, expecting to transfer the necessary machinery and workmen from the older plant.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Independence Mill, by the way, was primarily designed to treat monthly about 42,000 tons of low-grade ore from dumps and old workings, the latter estimated to amount to about three million tons. Eventually all milling operations of the Portland Company will doubtless be done at this new mill, which is modern in every respect, since the Victor Mill, built eight years ago as an experimental plant to handle ores too low in grade to bear shipment, was constructed at the mine on an unfavorable location.
graphic for visual presentation of text It has earned net profits more than double its original cost, however, while the net earnings of the Colorado Springs plant amount to several times the original cost of that plant.

Portland Mill Left Chlorination for Cyaniding
THE BATTLE of the processes has been nowhere waged more vigorously than in Colorado, where chlorination and cyanidation have competed with varying success during two decades for preference in the treatment of the ores of Cripple Creek.
graphic for visual presentation of text Cyanidation is the victor, for it has been apparent for several years that the application of tube-milling and cyanidation to the tailing from the chlorination plants had placed these in a humiliating position. The Portland Gold Mining Company has recently changed its mill to cyanidation.

Portland Mill Will Change to Cyanide
CYANIDING TO REPLACE CHLORINATION.
———

The Portland Gold Mining Co. is substituting the cyanide for the chlorination process of treating ore at its main mill in West Colorado Springs. The first section, capable of treating 200 tons daily, will be completed January 1, according to present plans, and the second section will be ready for operation about July 1.

The present chlorine plant has a capacity of 350 tons. When the two sections; with their combined capacity of 400 tons, are installed, the mill will keep in reserve part of the old machinery, so that a chlorine section capable of handling 150 tons will be ready for use at any time.

The Cyanide tailings plant of the company at West Colorado Springs, which was installed about five years ago, will continue to handle the tailings dump of the mill, left over from the chlorination.

Chlorination of Cripple Creek Ore Lost Out to Cyaniding
In the early days of gold milling in the Cripple Creek district the cyanide mills were worsted in the competition with the chlorination works and, for many years, the latter held the field.
graphic for visual presentation of text Improvements in cyanidation, however, altered the conditions, and the cyanide mills are now undoubtedly ahead.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text Emphasis is given to this conclusion by the fact that the Portland company recently decided to change its mill at Colorado City, having a capacity for the treatment of 10,000 tons of ore per month, from the chlorination to the cyanide process.
graphic for visual presentation of text This will leave the United States Reduction and Refining Company with the only chlorination mill in the field, and three of its chlorination mills are idle.

Portland Gold Mining Co. Abandons Chlorination
Chlorination Abandoned.
graphic for visual presentation of text It is generally understood that the chlorination plant of the Portland Gold Mining Company at Colorado Springs will be remodeled for use as a cyanide plant. The company treats Cripple Creek ore, and is using a combination of the chlorination and cyanide processes.
graphic for visual presentation of text The raw ore is first ground and roasted, then treated by chlorination, the tailings being concentrated on tables. The table concentrates are shipped to smelters, and the table tailings classified into sand and slime. The sand is ground in tube mills in cyanide solution, and the gold solutions recovered by decantation and precipitated on zinc shavings.
graphic for visual presentation of text In addition to treating the chlorination tailings by cyanidation, the company has treated a considerable tonnage of its old accumulated tailings by the same method. The total tonnage daily treated by cyanide has been about 500 tons, equally divided between current and old tailings.
graphic for visual presentation of text The chlorine is generated by the action of sulphuric acid on bleaching powder.

According to statements of the smelter and mill representatives and the accompanying estimates of values, the output of Cripple Creek mines in March amounted to 73,125 tons, carrying a gross bullion value of $1,358,455. This production is 3,979 tons in excess of that of February for tonnage, and $105,401 in value.

Increases are shown at all of the plants, with the local mills handling an exceptionally heavy tonnage. This output is largely due to the favorable weather condition. The output:

Chlorination.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mills of the Portland Gold Mining Company and United States Reduction & Refining Company, both at Colorado City, have continued to use the chlorination process on roasted Cripple Creek ores, following this with cyanidation of the tailings.
graphic for visual presentation of text At the former the chlorine is generated from bleaching powder and sulphuric acid, and at the latter by an electrolytic plant of 100 McDonald cells.

graphic for visual presentation of text John Collins Clancy was never chief chemist of the Portland mill. He worked in our laboratory a few months at day's pay. J. M. Tippett was and is the only chief chemist we ever had and Thos. B. Crowe was his assistant before his promotion. The use of cyanogen iodide in connection with potassium cyanide as a solvent for telluride of gold and the manner of producing it in contact with the ore, was the invention of Mr. Crowe and Mr. Tippett and was never claimed by Mr. Clancy until after he left the service of the Portland company.
graphic for visual presentation of text Our laboratory notes from day to day show this, and Mr. Clancy was not even in the State of Colorado when the experiments were made, as shown by the company's records. The process was abandoned by the Portland company over a year ago on account of the high cost of the chemicals used.

Portland Mill 1907 Tidbits

Regis Chauvenet wrote large articles about the Portland Mill in the October 24, 1907 (page 378-379) and October 31, 1907 (page 396-398) issues of Mining Reporter of the Portland Mill, but a short general description was given here;

This cyanide plant at Colorado City, Colo., treats chiefly the tailings from the Portland chlorination mill.

The tailings are nominally 14-mesh but 15 to 20 per cent, passes a 200-mesh screen. The average value is $1.40 in gold.

Two 22x5-ft. tube mills each crush 200 tons with one ton of 1.2 lb. KCN solution per 1.5 tons of tailings, 5.2 tons of lime being added per ton of tailings.

The pulp from the mills, 80 per cent, of which passes an 80-mesh screen, is diluted with "barren solution" containing 0.6 lb. KCN per ton, and passes to the decantation and agitation plant.

The decanted solution from this passes through sand filters before going to the zinc thread precipitation.

It was found that the tailings from decantation contained about 60c. of gold, a considerable portion of which was "free gold" of a whitish or gray color. (Probably imperfectly roasted telluride mineral.)

To save this material, blanket launders, 70 ft. long and 2.5 ft. wide, now convey the tube mill product to the decantation plant, with the result that the tailings average 40c. in place of 60c. The decantation process will probably be replaced by a filtration process in the near future.

The present cost of treatment is 50c. per ton.

Portland Mill Got Experimental Cyanide Mill During 1906
Considerable interest relative to the question of milling the lower grade ores was manifested during 1906. Not only have several attempts been made from time to time to operate small mills at a profit about the district, but the year 1906 found a number of the largest companies attacking the problem.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Portland Mining Company erected a 300-ton cyanide plant at Colorado City to treat the tailings from their chlorination plant, and have been carrying on experimental work to discover the most suitable cyanide method to replace their present chlorination mill.
graphic for visual presentation of text A very small quantity of custom ore, from mines other than the Portland, was treated in 1906, but more oxidized ore will be purchased from time to time to mix with the more refractory ores of the Portland mine.

Cyanidation has locked horns with chlorination in what promises to be a death struggle and all who are interested are anxiously awaiting the outcome.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Portland Gold Mining Co. is just completing a 400-ton plant for fine grinding in cyanide solution in tube-mills to treat the tailing that has been accumulating from its chlorination plant. This plant is supposed to contain $2.50 per ton, hence a handsome profit is expected. One tube-mill is lined with silex blocks and it is planned to line the other with cast-iron liners, which will furnish a useful comparison.
graphic for visual presentation of text Altogether, it seems as though cyanidation were destined soon to triumph. Bromo-cyanidation will now have a fair chance, and it would not be strange if it were to make a better showing than it has in previous trials.

Portland Mine in 1904 Banner Month
Colorado Springs, Dec. 26.—From reliable sources it is learned that December will be the banner month of the year as far as tonnage and value is concerned of the great Portland Mine on Battle Mountain.
graphic for visual presentation of text
graphic for visual presentation of text Not only is this company sending out its usual quota, between 8000 and 9000 tons of $30 ore, which goes to their own mill, but they will send from 6000 to 8000 tons to the smelters, which should average around $60 to the ton.
graphic for visual presentation of text In addition to this it is estimated that the different lessees operating the large dump from this property will produce more than 3000 tons of ore, which should average $15 to the ton, and, taking the facts in consideration, besides the usual December output, when every one tries to increase the tonnage to the utmost capacity, it is safe to predict that the output for the month will be very close to the two and a quarter million mark.

Info Title:
Portland Mill Happenings
Portland Gold Mining Co.—This company has a 300-ton mill with concrete floors throughout. They are well equipped with machine shops, making their own patterns for casting and manufacturing their machinery, outside of castings.
graphic for visual presentation of text Three precipitating tanks have recently been installed in a separate building, each tank upon a rock foundation of its own. This is more satisfactory, as in the old way the vibrations of the mill hindered the gold sulphides settling. Each tank holds eighty-five tons. The company has provided for any leakage by installing an inclined concrete floor.
graphic for visual presentation of text A new method of determining the amount of dust in the rolls is being used. Instead of the men sifting through the sieves up to the 150-mesh, they now have an upright rectangular box through the top of which runs a 2½-inch pipe, connected to a fan above, so that a steady suction goes through the box. Through a spout the pulp is poured into the box, which falls over a ledge to an inclined board below, and from there to the pan. Thus it passes twice in a thin sheet through the current. By weighing the pulp before and after, the difference gives the dust. This only takes about one minute for the whole operation.
graphic for visual presentation of text Superintendent Johnson has installed a new system of grates to allow of more perfect control of combustion. The grates are of individual pieces, having a pipe for cold water running through their center. The effect of cold water in the grates is such that it enables the cinders to be sufficiently cooled so that there is no tendency to warp or distort them nor the sealed door of the ash pit. Air is forced below the grate by a steam injector.
graphic for visual presentation of text Your correspondent saw a grate which had been removed that had been in use for a year. It appeared no worse than if used but two weeks. These individual shake grates allow the entire product of cinders and ashes to be discharged without the necessity of any manipulations from above. A fan forces cold air between the two walls of the fire box, emptying it into the arch, thus keeping the outer wall very cool. Lignite coal is being used. All the nuts used are cast with two crevices on opposite sides, so that if the heat causes them to stick they can be easily broken.
graphic for visual presentation of text Superintendent Johnson has also just completed a device to tell the heat of the ores in the roaster by optical comparison, a scale on the outside giving the degrees of heat. A person may read the temperature of the ore in any part of the furnace.
graphic for visual presentation of text Rabbles are used for the roasters that run in a half circle about the rabble arm, and are fastened to it by pins on the upper part of the arm projecting through the rabble eye. These are easily removed while hot by a pair of tongs.
graphic for visual presentation of text The filter in the barrels consists of lead boxes having 4-inch holes in the top and bottom, the box being filled with crushed quartz. The solution filters through this to the trough on the underside. The quartz and slime can be easily removed.

Stearns-Rogers Manufacturing Co. Suit Against Portland Gold Mining Co.
Portland Gold Mining Company.—The Stearns-Rogers Manufacturing Company has brought suit against this company in the United States Circuit Court to collect $54,045.67 alleged to be due on construction of the Portland chlorination mill. The money is alleged to be due on several contracts. A part of each of the total amounts has been paid, but the complaint states that a part of each yet remains unpaid and uncollected.
graphic for visual presentation of text The manufacturers were to furnish the plans, provide a superintendent for construction and to furnish certain parts of the material used. For the furnishing of plans and supervising of construction the manufacturing company was to get a certain per cent of the total cost. The entire works are alleged to have cost about $700,000, the manufacturing company furnishing about $112,772 of one kind of material and $52,383 of another kind. There is charged to be due $24,991 of the percentage for plans and construction, the balance of the amount sued for being on the material furnished.
graphic for visual presentation of text The objection of the Portland Company to paying the claim, has not been made public, though it is understood to be faulty construction of the mill and non-fulfillment of contract.

Colorado City Mills Runs Protected
The Standard and Portland mills at Colorado City are running under the protection of troops. The refusal of the Cripple Creek mine owners to stop shipping ore to the mills will doubtless result in a miners' strike unless it happens that the unions of Cripple Creek will refuse to recognize the authority of the Western Federation of miners and stick to their work. It is generally admitted that this strike is a fight to a finish between the Western Federation of Miners and the mine owners, and mill operators of Colorado, and that the struggle has but started.

Info Title:
Chlorination Mill of Portland Co. Will Opened About May 15
The new chlorination mill of the Portland Company will be opened about May 15. It was built at Colorado Springs by the Portland M. & M. Company and will have a capacity of 300 tons a day. This can be increased, however, should the output of the mine warrant it.
graphic for visual presentation of text The opening of this mill is an event of great importance in the mining world. The fact that it is built to handle the output of the Portland mine alone is a striking proof of the greatness of that property, and its completion makes the company entirely independent of the smelters.
graphic for visual presentation of text The new industry will give employment to a large number of Colorado Springs workmen.
