Preparing to Tunnel the Mountain From the Southwest Side.

Copper mountain is the scene of a good deal of activity just now, though the excitement which followed the discovery of gold-bearing ore on that mountain has, in a great measure, subsided. The mention of Copper mountain suggests the Fluorine, as yet the only steady shipper on the mountain.

Almost every other property on that part of the mountain on which any work has been done, has tried to locate an extension of the Fluorine ore deposit.

The first company on Copper mountain to put up a compressor and get to work with air drills is the York Tunnel and Mining company. The stockholders are mostly Chicago men of money, and they have not stinted to put up a good plant, and do everything in a workmanlike manner.
They own a full tunnel site, running into Copper mountain from the southwest. The tunnel is in about 140 feet. The machinery has just been put on, and a shaft house will be erected within the week.
The tunnel cuts the formations almost at right angles, and is perhaps the most important work now going on in that section, so far as prospecting the country goes. If there are any veins on the west slope of Copper, they will surely be cut by this bore.

4058. (Iowa City, Ia.) Will you please inform me regarding the York Gold Mining & Tunnel Company. Its main office is at Colorado Springs, Colo.; the property is located at Cripple Creek. The president of the company is Henry W. Hardy and the secretary H. J. Matthews.

Ans.: We have made exhaustive inquiries regarding the above-named company, and can find no one among the reputable mining brokers of Colorado Springs who is acquainted with the company or its officers. The secretary, Horace J. Mathews, whose address is given as post-office box 294, Colorado Springs, is unknown there among mining men.

As a whole, however, we would advise against the investment in tunnel companies, unless they have some surface claims in addition to the tunnel rights. It is a singular but undoubted fact that not a single tunnel enterprise in Cripple Creek has thus far been successful.
When in addition to tunnel rights they have owned a good many surface claims, then success has come; but the mere running of a tunnel has thus far proven utterly lacking in profitable results.

The York tunnel people have purchased some claims over on Copper mountain.

Manager Tascar of the York tunnel on Copper mountain, has let a contract for another 100 feet of work on his bore. The tunnel has a complete plant of machinery and it will only take a few days to finish the job.

The York tunnel is working and their objective point is the Fluorine chute.

Copper mountain, especially around the Fluorine, is very active. That property has made two shipments of ore in the past few weeks, and it is said that the ore ran much better than an ounce.
Every claim around the Fluorine is working toward it, the object being the ore chute which made that property a producer. The question now is, who will get the ore chute first, and how many of the companies now working will be lucky in finding the ore chute.
The Fluorine produced considerable over $70,000 when the ore chute was encountered, and then lost the chute, and the most experienced mining men say that someone must and will find it. Someone will strike the chute, and then Copper mountain will hum along again.

COPPER MOUNTAIN NOTES.
The predictions of the best informed mining men of the district, that Tenderfoot, Rhyolite and Copper Mountains would soon be considered strictly in it, is almost daily being proven correct.

The latest news in this direction is the strike in the York tunnel, on Copper mountain.

The work has been pushed ahead with much vigor by Matthews & Neff, the managers, and last week an eighteen inch vein was encountered that runs from an ounce to seven ounces and a half.

The tunnel company has 500 feet of the vein on their own property, in a northerly direction, and its southerly strike will cross the Susie of Atlanta C. & C. company, and also the Flourine.

The stock of the York tunnel is principally owned by Eastern parties, and very little is held here.

The president of this company is Henry W. Hardy, of Chicago, and H. J. Matthews of Colorado Springs, is secretary.

A meeting of the board of directors of the York Tunnel will be called in Colorado Springs for the purpose of exploring this new vein, erecting ore bins, etc., while the present bore will be continued into the hill, and will further demonstrate the value of Copper mountain.

THE YORK TUNNEL.
The York Tunnel company on Copper mountain is erecting ore bins and saving some ore from an eighteen-inch vein cut 450 feet in from the mouth of the tunnel.
R. A. Austin, of Chicago, one of the principal stockholders, has been visiting the property and returns home tomorrow very much pleased with the prospects.

YORK TUNNEL.
The York tunnel has let a contract for driving its tunnel another 200 feet. The bore is equipped with good machinery and a big compressor and the way they break rock there is a caution.
Harder granite cannot be found in the entire district and such heavy charges of giant are necessary that the rock is almost powdered.

Ans.: This company owns the York tunnel and tunnel site on Copper mountain in the east half of section two, in the Cripple Creek district. The company has completed 170 feet of tunnel, and is said to have a good plant of machinery. It is impossible to say when a dividend is likely to be declared, but there is little or no probability of one in the near future.
