Info Title:
1902 Development in Mary McKinney
The year of 1902 just ended, has been the most important one in the history of Cripple Creek, from the standpoint of development. Never before have there been seen such strong indications of the permanency of ore shoots with depth. The Mary McKinney only broke sufficient ore to pay expenses and the regular dividend. There is enough ore broken in the various levels of the Mary McKinney mine to keep up the regular production for six months, without pulling a stope or working a face.

graphic for visual presentation of textCONNECTIONS FOR AIR MADE BETWEEN SECOND AND THIRD LEVELS
graphic for visual presentation of text—————————
graphic for visual presentation of text Thirty additional men were put to work yesterday on the Birch lease on the Mary McKinney. This was made possible by the connection recently made between the lower level and the one above, giving better air.
graphic for visual presentation of text The lease was recently equipped with a compressor and air drills, and the smoke from the heavy charges of powder made it impossible to do any work immediately after a shot. Since the upraise from the lower workings has reached the upper drift, there has been good air, and more men can be employed.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Jersey company, which holds the lease, has also been influenced to this step by the action of the Mary McKinney company in refusing to extend the lease beyond the nine months which it still has to run. This being the case, the lessees naturally desire to take out all the ore they may have blocked out while the lease lasts.
graphic for visual presentation of text The chute is an immensely rich one, shipments of all grades running an average value of $2,000 net to the carload. Some of the high grade is sacked, and is worth many dollars a pound.

Iron Master to Be Worked From Mary McKinney
The Iron Master, on which S. J. Morrison et al. have a year's lease, is looked upon as a most promising prospect.
graphic for visual presentation of text A contract has been made to sink and timber a 120-foot shaft on the Mary McKinney at twenty feet south of the south line of the Iron Master by April 25. Three shifts are now working on this shaft. When it is down 100 feet drifting north will commence which will run into the Iron Master at a depth of 150 feet, and it is confidently expected that the big Boss vein be encountered before many weeks.

Mary McKinney Workings
The output of the Mary McKinney last month averaged a little less than sixty tons a day, of an average grade of $40 a ton. The production this month will be a little heavier. About all the ore which is being shipped is taken out in dead work.
graphic for visual presentation of text The flow of water is gradually receding, and not to exceed 600 gallons a minute is being raised from the 500-foot level. A few months ago 1,500 gallons was the record.
graphic for visual presentation of text Sinking an additional 100 feet will be commenced about the first of the year. A large station will be cut at the 600-foot level and a pump has already been ordered, capable of raising 1,200 gallons of water a minute.
graphic for visual presentation of text A drift will be extended close to the vein and a diamond drill will be used to tap the ore shoot and water flow. The water will then be gradually drained out so there will be no danger of drowning the big pump. At least 1,500 gallons of water a minute is confidently looked for at the 600-foot level and it may be much more.

Midland Terminal Full Train Memorial Day
Cripple Creek.—The Midland Terminal railway, operating an excursion from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek Memorial day, did not possess enough rolling equipment to accommodate the number desiring to visit the district. At the Santa Fe depot in Colorado Springs 100 person were turned away and seven heavily loaded coaches made the trip. The reason for the large number of excursionists is attributed to the renewed activity in Cripple Creek mining. A number of the visitors were taken through the Mary McKinney mine.
