Info Title:
One Man Hurt in Mary Ann Accident
DRAWN INTO A SHIVE WHEEL
A Remarkably Narrow Escape From Death.
AN ELECTRIC HOIST USED
Men Yelled Wildly but Motorneer Could Not Hear Them.
RARE PRESENCE OF MIND
One Man Cut and Bruised but Other Escaped Without Injury.

E. F. Van Why and E. D. Burke are alive this morning, but it is through no fault of an electric hoist that their bodies are not now at the morgue.

Both miners are employed on the Mary Ann on Raven Hill, and after splitting their shots jumped on the bucket and were hoisted to surface. As the collar of the shaft was approached the bucket did not slacken its speed, and the men instantly knew that something was wrong. They yelled frantically and men all over the hill heard them, but not so the man who was in charge of the electric hoist, and up they kept going.

Van Why jumped, but from where Burke was standing there was no chance to follow his partner's example, so he did the next best thing, and with the quickness of a cat slid into the bucket.

He tried to dodge the shive wheel, but all to no purpose, and his head was badly cut.

The crazy motor was finally stopped. The trap door over the shaft closed and Burke was lowered to the ground. He had not lost consciousness and as quickly as possible himself and friends came to town, where Dr. Heller dressed the fortunate man's wounds, for Mr. Burke is surely fortunate to be alive.

One excuse given for the men having been carried into the shive wheel is that the lights on surface had been blown out by the wind just before midnight.
