Shurtloff No. 2.
Steady shipments are being made from this property on Bull Hill, just south of the Burns claim of the Acacia Company. It is operated by the Valley City Gold Mining Company, under a lease and bond. The shaft has been sunk to a considerable depth, and a large amount of ore shipped.
There is litigation among the owners as to the ownership of an interest in the property.

Parties working the Shurtloff dump on Bull hill have just closed a shipment of ore which will give returns of $50 per ton. The rock which is yielding these values was thrown aside as waste by the parties who previously operated the Shurtloff.

Colorado Springs. July 6. For a consideration of $150,000 the Shurtloff Consolidated Company gave a warranty deed to the Valley City Gold Mining Company for the Shurtloff No. 2 lode mining claim. The instrument shows the largest sum paid in many months for the transfer of mining property.
Including the settlement, President Carlton has paid out the sum of $250,000 in cold cash for the fraction of ground comprising 2.59 acres, making it at a rate of $100,000 per acre, the largest sum ever paid per acre in the history of the gold camp.

Shurtloff.—It is reported that two new and extremely rich ore shoots have been opened on this property in the tenth level at a depth of 800 feet. At that depth a new vein has been encountered that is entirely different from the one worked by the former owners of the property.
The ore shoot has been opened for a distance of 120 feet in this level. It averages thirty-three feet in width, but in the breast it is now sixty feet wide.
One-fifth of the material being extracted from this shoot is said to average $45 to the ton. At another point a cross vein has been encountered which is about eight feet wide. This ore is said to run $80 to the ton.
The big ore shoot has been proven to be continuous, a drift from the Findley, located farther down the hill, having opened it at a point 200 feet below.
The Shurtloff is owned by A. E. Carlton, who paid the sum of $250,000 for the 2.59 acres of ground, or $100,000 per acre. This is the highest price ever paid per acre in the camp.

Colorado Springs, Aug. 25. The new and wonderfully rich ore shoot that was recently opened up in the Shurtloff mine on Bull Hill, has now, beyond all question of a doubt, been demonstrated to be one of the greatest strikes made in the district for many years.

Colorado Springs, Sept. 8. The Shurtloff Company, adjoining the Findley mine, is now making a large production, their grade of ore being remarkable. Most of their ore is coming from the seventh level downward. While the tonnage of the Shurtloff is not as large as the Findley, yet the grade is much better.
The Shurtloff Company is now employing in the neighborhood of 70 men.

Colorado Springs, Oct. 4.—The Findley and Shurtloff mines are now producing about 100 tons of ore per day that carry gold contents to the value of $45 to the ton.
A world of ore has been opened in these mines, and when they are consolidated the first of the month the new company will hold a continuous ore shoot that is proven for a distance of 1450 feet.

The Finley and Shurtloff mines on Bull hill are extracting large quantities of ore.

Cripple Creek District.
The special commission of three engineers appointed by Judge Cunningham to investigate the Findley-Valley City consolidation in the Cripple Creek district, has reported.
The commissioners find that the terms of consolidation are equitable in spite of the opposition of minority stockholders in the Findley.
The commissioners were Messrs. Max Boehmer, E. Le Neve Foster, E. E. Chase. The report was as follows:

"We have the honor to submit our report as referees in the above cause, and beg leave to state that we have followed the instructions of the court as expressed in the stipulation between the parties in interest, and that we have reached a final conclusion in the matter referred to us.

"It is our unanimous opinion that the proposed consolidation on equal terms of the Findley Gold Mining Company and the Valley City Gold Mining Company is fair and profitable to the Findley Gold Mining Company.

"It soon became plainly evident during the first days of our examination that we would be able to arrive at a conclusion without the need of further exploration work.
We, therefore, endeavored to finish our task within the time set, and, as nearly as possible, within the amount appropriated in the stipuation.

"To accomplish this we assumed as correct the maps of the surface boundaries and the underground workings as furnished to us by the engineer who makes the surveys and maps for both companies.
We further assumed that the paper title of record had been examined by attorneys, and that such was not within our province. In addition we took it for granted that the balance on the books of the First National Bank of Cripple Creek, as shown to us, represented the cash assets above all debts for the companies, excepting only amounts due for current expenses, and that the latter would be balanced by the ore in transit.

"The conclusion reached by us was based upon a full consideration of the following points and each of these was given the weight it deserved in the matter to be determined:

"I. Examination of the workings of both mines and other developments in their vicinity.
"II. Extent of development and value of plants and surface improvements in both.
"III. The ore still standing and broken ore still remaining in the stopes.
"IV. Prospective value of both mines on further and deeper development, including the question of pumping.
"V. The large amount of ore that has been extracted from the Valley City property and shipped as Findley ore, the profit from which has largely increased the Findley bank account.
"VI. The grade of the ore in different parts of both properties.
"VII. The amount of money to the credit of both parties in the First National Bank of Cripple Creek on the 26th day of November, 1904. These amounts show $152,000 to the credit of the Findley Gold Mining Company and $39,000 to the credit of the Valley City Gold Mining Company.
"VIII. The title, by patent and by deed, of the Findley Gold Mining Company to the Findley Lode claim, as surveyed for patent exclusive of its conflict with the Shurtloff No. 2, Orpha May No. 2, Lucky Gus and Christmas Belle Lode claims and the Hull City Placer claim.
"IX. The title by patent and deed of the Valley City Gold Mining Company to the Shurtloff No. 2 Lode claim, as surveyed for patent, exclusive of its conflict with the Grouse, Pike's Peak, Orpha May No. 1, Orpha May No. 2 and Bison No. 2 Lode claims, but including the Pauper conflict; also its title to Happy Thought Lode claim as surveyed for patent; exclusive of its conflict with the Bison No. 2, Pauper, Shurtloff No. 2 and Findley Lode claims.
"X. The apex rights on all veins disclosed in both properties, against each other and against all other claims adjoining, according to the patent title of each mining claim or fraction thereof included in the territory owned by the respective companies. In this connection the matter of discovery veins received due consideration.
"XI. The apex rights of other mining claims in the vicinity not belonging to either company.

"The fifteenth level of the Findley mine could not be inspected because it was under water, hence the development of the mine below the fourteenth level could not be taken into consideration."

Findley.—The referees have reported that the terms of consolidation between the Valley City and Findley are equitable.

Colorado Springs, Colo., March 18th, 1905.—The Findley Company, operating the Findley and Shurtloff claims, has just received returns on a shipment of ore that was settled for at the rate of 104½ ounces to the ton, which gives it a value of $2,091 to the ton.
The body of ore from which this rich shipment came is not the only one in the property by any means, as the large ore shoot recently struck near the bottom level is running very close to this amount, and a shipment will leave the property in the course of the next few days.

Findley—The company is installing a large plant of machinery over the Shurtloff shaft and anticipate doubling the output of the property as soon as this is in operation.
The officials are reticent regarding the report that extra dividends will be paid.

Among the principal mines from which the Standard Mill treats ores are the Abe Lincoln, American Eagle, Elkton, El Paso, Findley, Golden Cycle, Shurtloff, Strong, Theresa, and Vindicator.
In April, 1904, the plant was handling about 250 tons daily.

Denver, Colo.—It is reported that the strike made last week on the Shurtloff claim of the Findley property, at a depth of 800 feet, yields better than anything formerly discovered in the Findley or the Shurtloff, and that the shoot is a very large one.

Findley.—The management of this company is preparing to start operations on a much larger scale on the Shurtloff claim. The company will soon commence shipments to the new Golden Cycle mill, with which it has a contract for the treatment of 100 tons per day.

Extraordinary revelations have been made in the holdings of the Findlay on Bull hill where in the Shurtloff claim at the 10th level 850 feet from the surface 27 feet of ore has been entered and partially opened. The ore is said to run about 3 ounces gold per ton.
Strikes of very rich ore, in narrow seams as a rule, are very frequent, but the discovery in question is extraordinary in view of its strength and the average gold content of the vein matter.

Denver.—The working force on the Findlay and Shurtloff mines is to be increased from 150 to 200 men. These two properties are producing about 100 tons daily of an ounce and a half grade. The ore goes to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado City.

Shurtloff—In this Bull Hill property, owned by the Findley Consolidated Company, an ore shoot of high values, was recently uncovered in the 1,100-foot level. The ore is a sylvanite, showing at times considerable free gold.

Denver.—Reports from the Findley state that 125,000 tons of ore were piled up in the stopes of that property during the cessation of shipments pending the completion of the new mill of the Golden Cycle at Colorado City.
Ore is being mined in every level from the second of the Shurtloff to the fifteenth in the Findley, 1,365 feet below surface. The Findley combination has become one of the greatest mines in Colorado with enormous reserves systematically blocked out.

The Findley Consolidated Gold Mining Company is shipping out an average of 100 tons of ore per day from its Findley-Shurtloff claims on Bull hill.
As development work is carried on the grade of ore is increasing, and is returning from $40 to $45 in gold to the ton.
Recently a large sized ore body was encountered at a depth of 800 feet. This vein, which is thirty feet wide and of a sylvanite formation, carries values of two ounces in gold all the way across.

Denver.—The Findley Con., operating the Findley and Shurtloff on Bull hill, is shipping 100 tons daily; contents 2 to 2¼ ounces. The larger proportion of the ore is being treated at the Portland mill near Colorado Springs.

The Findley Consolidated Company, operating the Shurtloff and Findley claims on Bull Hill, is now shipping 100 tons of ore daily.

Cripple Creek.—The Findley Con. working in the richest territory on Bull hill is shipping an average of 100 tons daily to the Portland mill near Colorado Springs.

Denver.—The richest strike ever made in the Shurtloff Plain of the Findley Con. was in the 9th level in the extreme westerly slope. A vein 2 ft. wide was opened that runs $300 clear across. There is a 4 in. streak near the center that carries $6 per pound.
The Findley is sending about 100 tons daily to the Golden Cycle mill; general average 2 ozs.

Cripple Creek.—Ore giving high values has been encountered in the Shurtloff of the Findley on Bull hill. The strike occurred at a depth of 900 feet. The shoot is 3 ft. wide and is sprinkled with sylvanite. This is the third strike made by the Findley within the last 30 days.

Cripple Creek.—The working force at the Findley has been increased to 150 miners and the output will be increased. The ore averages $20 per ton.

The Findley Consolidated Company is carrying on operations through the Findley and Shurtloff shafts, and is shipping about 125 tons of ore daily, which gives the company third rank in the district as regards tonnage.
The average value of the ore is said to be $30.

Denver.—At the Findley shaft 11,000 ft. of 6-in. airpipe is being laid and approximately 2,200 ft. of 3-in. pipe is being placed in the Findley, Shurtloff and Mountain Beauty claims preparatory to extensive operations.

Productive operations are to be resumed on November 1st at the Findley and Shurtloff mines, on Bull hill.

The Findley Cons. G. M. Co. is sending out, from its Findley and Shurtloff properties, about three cars of high-grade smelting ore daily.

Cripple Creek.—Vigorous development work is being given the Findley and Shurtloff properties of the Findley Consolidated Gold Mining company on Bull hill, and at present Superintendent Clements is shipping on an average of three cars of ore a day to the local samplers.
On the 1,400-foot level an ore body of extremely large dimensions is being broken. The grade of mineral from this shoot is very rich and average returns are better than two ounces to the ton.

An amicable settlement of the matters at issue between the Acacia Gold Mining Co. and the Findley Consolidated Mining Co. has been arrived at without recourse to litigation.
By the agreement duly filed for record with the county clerk and recorder last week, the Acacia company is allowed exclusive and perpetual right to dump waste rock on a certain portion of the Shurtloff and Pauper lode mine claims of the Findley company, the Findley company to have the right to remove and dispose of said dump as their own property.
It is further agreed that the Acacia company shall protect the two shafts on the north end of the Shurtloff claim from filling up and damage from said dumping of waste rock.
By the terms of the settlement the South Burns Leasing Co., operating the South Burns mine, will, or has already received a satisfactory cash payment, representing the net value of the ore extracted from within the lines of the Burns claim by the Findley company.

The return on a two-car shipment from the Shurtloff mine was $84 per ton.

Findley—The Shurtloff, leased for two years to Thomas Bailey and J. P. Kano, has been started up. Twelve hundred to 1800 tons per month of ore of good grade are being brought to the surface through the main Findley shaft.

Frank Kurie, former superintendent for the Portland company, who has been absent for a long period in Government service, will resume operations after January 1. He has secured a lease option on blocks 215-216 of the Stratton estate on Bull hill.
The ground covers the Shurtloff holding of the estate, and Kurie some years ago mined a good grade of ore from the Hawk shaft on the property.
The blocks are directly over the Basket and Luce discovery at the 1500-ft. level of the American Eagle shaft, and Kurie is confident that with sinking he will open the vein nearer the surface.
