Info Title:
New Cyanide Based Mill Gives Satisfactorily Results
Mr. J. Brackly is in from Cripple Creek and gave a few interesting facts Wednesday morning concerning Colorado's newest gold camp. A new lixiviator, operating under the McArthur-Foster process, has lately been started up. This scheme is to run the ore through on cyanide process, and the results so far are entirely satisfactory.

Brodie Mill Improvements
At Mound City, in the Cripple Creek district, the cyanide process with the Argall improvements has been feeling its way to success all summer.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Mound City plant, with capacity for ten tons per day, is now being enlarged to fifty tons. It has handled about 2,000 tons of Cripple Creek gold ores of all grades and conditions and has emerged from its experiments upon solid ground.
graphic for visual presentation of text The cost of chemicals has been reduced to less than the average cost of roasting. In the Mound City and Florence plants roasting will be dispensed with, hence the new venture will be able to compete in the ore market with the chlorination plants, and will doubtless give the smelters a challenge on medium grade ores.

Short Description of the Brodie Mill
At Mound City we see a large cyanide mill which appears to be successfully solving the problem of the treatment of the Cripple Creek ores by the cyanide process, a process which may be roughly described thus : The rock and ore are ground very fine and then pass into vats containing cyanide of potassium, the acid of which dissolves both quartz and ore. Zinc filings or shavings are then thrown in and the gold precipitates on the filings and is cleaned off and saved.

Brodie Mill Info & Thoughts
Mechanical Concentration in Connection with the Cyanide Process.—At the Brodie mill at Cripple Creek, the process was introduced in 1897 of leaching raw the telluride ore (crushed to 30-mesh), and afterward concentrating on Wilfley tables. The concentrates are roasted and leached again. The tailings from the second lixiviation are again passed over the concentrators, whereby 10 or 12 tons are reduced to one, and the concentrates are subjected once more to the cyanide solution.
graphic for visual presentation of text It is claimed that an important additional saving has been effected in this manner, but I am disposed to think that the data as to this are misleading. Some of the coarse pellets of gold that have been subjected to the cyanide solution, practically without action upon them, maybe recovered from the tailings by gravity concentration; but finely-crushed ore containing its value in the form of brittle tellurite minerals appears ill-adapted to this kind of treatment.

graphic for visual presentation of text—————————
graphic for visual presentation of text It was reliably reported last evening that, within a week, the old Brodie mill will be reopened, under entirely new management. Whether the mill will be leased or not, could not be learned, but no matter under what conditions the mill opens, there will be another outlet for the already congested condition of the ore market.
graphic for visual presentation of text The Brodie mill has a capacity of 60 tons a day, and when it opens there will be no difficulty in filling it with ore, and the mill can run full blast without losing an hour.
graphic for visual presentation of text The mill was one of the first in the district, and that it was closed, even temporarily, was surprising to all, and the news that it will again open will be hailed with delight by people who, at present, have no outlet for their ore.

Brodie Mill Helps Increase Mill-Grade Production
During the month of March, the Brodie mill were an important factor for the district's increase in mill-grade production. The increase in the mill-grade production is very gratifying. It is due to the increased capacity of the reduction plants treating Cripple Creek ores.

Brodie Mill Tailings Lessees Nelson and Associates Experimenting
Colorado Springs, Oct. 26.—Lessee Nelson and associates, who have secured a lease on the tailings of the old Brodie Mill, which was destroyed by fire some two years ago, and are treating this cast-off rock are now making much better than wages by receiving gross values of $22 to the ton.
graphic for visual presentation of text The lessees are now trying a new experiment. When the great fire occurred the rock was roasted to a certain degree, and from repeated tests made in the last few weeks they are of the opinion that it can all be treated successfully by the cyanide process, and are now getting out a small shipment, which will be sent to one of the mills in the district to test their theories.
graphic for visual presentation of text If successful the balance of the rock will be hauled to a near-by mill.

Mr. Philip Argall & Brodie Mill
At a banquet to celebrate the completion of the second unit of cyanide plant for the treatment of low grade dump ore at Stratton's Independence, Cripple Creek, Philip Argall gave a speech containing interesting reminiscences.
graphic for visual presentation of text Eighteen years ago he commenced his connection with the cyanide process by going to Deadwood, South Dakota, in the interests of the owners of the MacArthur-Forrest patents. At this spot in the Black Hills a cyanide plant had been erected and had proved a failure at first, and advice was required.
graphic for visual presentation of text His second trip was to what is now the Brodie mill at Cripple Creek, where the cyanide process was also a failure. In both these cases the ore was ground fine and could not be leached; this was in the days before slime agitators.
graphic for visual presentation of text Nevertheless Mr. Argall was firmly convinced that cyanide treatment would be the most suitable for Cripple Creek ores, and by tongue and pen was persistent in his advocacy of its adoption. Indeed he then made a design for a treatment plant which was adopted 14 years later at Stratton's Independence.
