Johnson's Lease on Half Moon
It was on April 12, 1897, that Carl Johnson started work on the Half Moon of the Matoa company. He thought he would have to have a little backing and got several parties to take small interests with him in the lease, but it was never necessary for them to put up a cent.

Since that day more than $550,000 worth of ore has been marketed from this block of ground, and at that it is not exhausted. What is needed is more sinking, and the life of the lease is too short to warrant such work, so consequently the Matoa company has bought the machinery on the ground and Carl Johnson and associates have retired.

Half Moon Lessees in Body of Ore
The Gold Hill and Poverty Gulch sections of the camp are coming to the front in splendid shape under the leasing system, the latest being in the Half Moon, belonging to the Matoa Company.

At the 200 foot level, a four foot body of ore running from $30 to $100 per ton has been uncovered. Carl Johnson, the "lucky Swede" made the Half Moon famous about five years ago, when he opened a big body of high grade, but after a depth of 400 feet was reached, the values disappeared. The company however, on royalties secured from ore shipped, was able to pay over $100,000 in dividends.

Half Moon Happenings
Matoa Company.—Lessees on the Half Moon claim of this company have opened up a body of ore three feet in width heavily impregnated with sylvanite. This ore body was encountered while driving a crosscut in the 200-foot level, where a narrow seam was found.

By following this for fifteen feet the shoot widened considerably, and assays are said to indicate values of from three to ten ounces gold to the ton. Seven hundred thousand dollars was taken from an ore shoot on this property several years ago before the shoot pinched out.

The company has sunk the shaft to a depth of nearly 900 feet and it is proposed to continue it to the 1,000-foot point.

Michigan Gold M. B. & L. Co. Inquiry
Michigan Gold M., B. & L. Co.

14023. (Troy, N. Y.) Will you kindly give me through your paper what information you can in regard to the Michigan Gold Mining, Bonding & Leasing Co. (operating in Colorado and elsewhere), of which J. L. Rice, of Boston, was financial agent?

Ans.: This company was organized about 1896, with a capital, we believe, of $1,500,000, the par value of the shares being $1. Of the capital stock, one-half was put in the treasury and the rest went to the promoters. As the name implies, this company was organized for the purpose of bonding, leasing and working mining properties.

At the beginning of its history, this company held a number of what is considered valuable leases, but owing to a lack of capital it was forced to give them up, and we are told one property was lost to the company through neglect in having the same patented.

Since forfeiting its leases, the company has been doing nothing, although it is still a corporation. There are said to be about 500,000 shares of stock remaining in the treasury, and it is the intention of the officers of the company to sell this stock in an endeavor to lease some more property, when an attempt will be made to resuscitate the company.

We do not advise a purchase of the stock, however.
