Proper Gold Mining Co.
3967. (Warren, Pa.) Can you give any information as to the condition and value of the "Proper Gold Mining Co.," of Cripple Creek, Colo., the size and quality of the veins, and the character of the walls.

Ans.: Mr. C. M. Williams, the secretary, informs us that this company owns four claims (St. Clair, Occidental, Proper and Chance) on Globe Hill, Cripple Creek. There are three shafts on the property, from 100 to 140 feet deep, with considerable drifting.
The walls consist of porphyry, phonolite and breccia. Two large dikes have been cut, one being basaltic, about 20 feet wide, carrying low grade ore averaging about $7 per ton; the other of breccia. There are two sets of lessees at work, five men being employed.
The ore runs from $15 to $650 per ton, and about 100 tons have been shipped.

The company is capitalized at 1,500,000 shares of $1 each, and was incorporated in April, 1896. The original amount of treasury stock was 450,000 shares. The first treasury stock sold netted the company five cents per share, and the last sold netted ten cents per share.

The company is said to be a close corporation and does not appear in any Cripple Creek handbook, which professes to give practically a complete list and full particulars of all the shipping mines of the district owned by companies.

The above showing would indicate that the value of the company and its stock is speculative.

The Proper, adjoining the Colorado King, has been getting out quite a little ore of late from the first or 50-foot level. Yesterday 30 tons were marketed that it is expected will run about two ounces. Mansfield, Smith and Walker are working the ground under lease.

The lessee on the Proper claim on Gold hill, one of the Stratton properties, in an open cut has uncovered what now appears to be a bonanza, in the shape of a ten foot vein of good grade ore. The lessee claims to have known of the existence of this vein for five years, but has been silently awaiting the time when he should be able to secure a lease on the property. This lease was granted him a few days ago, and he lost no time in uncovering the ore.

Stratton Lease.—A lease on blocks 92, 95 and 97 of the Stratton-Cripple Creek property was recently given to N. B. Sullivan. The ground is located on the Trooper claim, adjoining the famous C. O. D. mine on Globe hill.

A splendid grade of smelting ore has been opened on the Proper claim, belonging to the Stratton's Cripple Creek Mining and Development Company, on Globe Hill, Cripple Creek.

Denver.—The new shoot of ore over 2 feet wide opened in the Proper claim of the Stratton estate situated on the northeast slope of Gold hill, is running at the rate of $57 per ton.
The Keystone Leasing company, working a shaft on the Proper claim, has uncovered a vein 7 to 9 feet wide, the ore carrying about 1 ounce to the ton.

McLeod, Lewis & Jones, lessees on the Proper claim of the Stratton Estate, shipped a car of ore last week, which gave returns of $50 per ton. A car of ore per week is being shipped from this lease, the ore being obtained at a depth of 100 feet.

The Union Leasing Co., operating the Proper claim of the Stratton Estate, on Gold hill, has found a promising vein 10 ft. north of the Proper shaft. The ore is 4 ft. wide, and was cut at a depth of 165 ft. Samples taken across this width run several hundred dollars per ton.

Denver.—A big strike have been made within the corporate limits of Cripple Creek on the Monitor and Proper ground on Globe hill just within the east line of the city. At a depth of 200 ft. the Union Leasing Company opened up a 4-ft. vein carrying good values in gold.

Denver.—The initial shipment of ore from the new strike made by the Union Leasing Company on the Proper-Monitor claims of the Stratton estate, is estimated to contain 5 oz. per ton.

Cripple Creek—The Union Leasing Co., operating the Proper claim in Poverty gulch, has struck mineral running as high as $2,000 per ton. The run is said to be 3 to 4 ft. wide.

The Union Leasing Co. has resumed work on the Proper claim, which is on the northeast slope of Gold hill, near the C. O. D. and the El Paso Gold King.

The Proper mine is again producing ore which will average about $40 per ton.

The Proper mine of the Stratton estate has resumed shipments. The ore has been exposed at the 300-ft. level.

The lessees on the Proper mine are reported to have encountered a new shoot of ore running high in gold and occurring at a depth of some 80 ft. at the surface.

A rich strike has been made by the Union Leasing Co. on the north end of the Proper, one of the Globe hill holdings of the Stratton estate. On securing the lease, work was at first confined to trenching.
Almost at grass roots rich float was found, and when solid formation was reached a well defined vein showed. A new shaft was then started and at depth of 25 ft. pay values obtained.
The shaft is now about 45 ft. deep, and the vein 2.5 ft. to 3 ft. wide, with the quartz assaying $15 to $110 a ton. A trial shipment is being made ready.

The Union Leasing Co. has opened a 3-ft. vein on the north end of the Proper claim that assays from $15 to $20 per ton. A shaft is down 45 ft. on the vein.

From the Proper claim of the Stratton estate, in Poverty gulch near the C. O. D., Oscar Sims last month sent out two cars, settling for the ore at better than 2 ozs.

Oscar Sims, working the Proper claim, south of the C. O. D., in Poverty gulch, for five years, will sink a third shaft, going down 300 ft. to catch an ore shoot worked for some time.
In the east shaft, now down 50 ft., ore was opened within a few feet of the shaft and stoping commenced.

Globe Hill Mining Operation in Long Tunnel

Cripple Creek, Colo.—A lease from the Stratton Mining and Milling Company on the Proper mine and the Chicago and Cripple Creek tunnel for the Globe Hill Mining Company has been secured by Al Konselman and considerable prospecting work is now under way on the property.
All operations are being carried on through the Chicago tunnel and the present objective is to raise from the tunnel level to connect with the present stopes on the Proper property.
At a point two thousand feet from the portal of the tunnel a drift is now being driven in a northeasterly direction under the Proper mine, on Globe Hill. The drift is now approximately 125 feet from the main tunnel and present plans call for continuing this for another 50 feet.
Then a crosscut, approximately 25 feet long will be driven and from this point a 130 foot raise should connect with the south end of No. 3 stope of the Proper mine, according to Konselman. This stope was last worked by Dick Tremayne in 1947 and at that time has some excellent values.
Konselman pointed out that the work was being carried on through the Chicago tunnel in order to get under the ore of the Proper and make it possible to mine the property less expensively. When this stope was worked from the Proper shaft it was necessary to handle the ore four times but working through the tunnel it will be dropped to the tunnel level and trammed to the portal for shipment.
Surface buildings at the portal of the tunnel consist of a change room, compressor house and ore bins. Tram trains used in the 2,000 foot ore are powered by a Universal Tramaire motor. Harry Allen is superintendent of the property.
